1000-Lb. Best Friends’ Scott Bagwill’s Surgery at Risk in Sneak Peek

Scott Bagwill was ready to go under the knife for his bariatric surgery, but at the last minute, a complication arose that put the procedure in jeopardy.

In Us Weekly’s exclusive sneak peek of the Tuesday, December 17 season 3 finale of 1,000-Lb. Best Friends, Scott is in the hospital, about to undergo the weight-loss surgery, when his heart rate spikes.

The surgeon, Dr. Charles Procter, calmly explains to Scott that if they cannot get his heart rate under control, they will need to cancel the surgery.

“Scott coming in today, being stressed and nervous before surgery has caused his heart rate to shoot up into the 150s,” Procter said in a confessional. “We want to proceed with a bunch of caution. So we’re going to go ahead and get a 12 lead EKG, we’re also going to get ahold of his regular cardiologist and make sure he feels comfortable with us moving forward.”

Hannah Jiles, Janelle Brown and more reality TV personalities have been candid about losing weight since appearing on camera. Hannah, for her part, frequently discussed body positivity during Love Is Blind season 7, which aired in October 2024. “I’ve always struggled with my weight, my entire life. Whether I was skinny or whether I was […]

“The worst case scenario right now is his heart is beating so fast that it begins to affect his blood pressure, making him what we call hemodynamically unstable,” Procter continued. “If we don’t get to the bottom of what’s going on with scars, heart rate, we’re going to cancel the surgery.”

Scott, who first came to Procter weighing 596 pounds, was visibly emotional at the potential setback, gripping the sides of his bed and appearing to cry.

His mom was seated by his side, doing her best to calm him down.

“Don’t overreact. Relax. Breathe,” she told him. “It’s your nerves, your anxiety, your ADHD.”

In a separate confessional, Scott wondered if it really was that simple.

“I’m starting to wonder, ‘Is it just nerves or is this something else that could majorly affect if Dr. Proctor continues with the surgery or not?’” he asked.

Though Scott is relatively new to the series, which primarily follows best friends Vannessa, Meghan, and Ashely through their weight-loss journeys, he has already made waves among the fanbase and with his castmates.

In the season’s penultimate episode, which aired December 10, Ashley and Vanessa vented to each other about Scott lying about his eating habits. Earlier in the season, fans called him out for being disrespectful to his mother and for fake crying at the scale.

When the gang took a trip to the mountains together, Scott and fellow new cast member Tina ended up in an explosive argument at the dinner table over, of all things, the taste of the meatballs Scott prepared.

1,000-Lb. Best Friends airs on TLC Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET.
